As a teenager, I was incredibly grateful to have a mom who understood the connection between movement and mental health. Whenever I found myself spiraling emotionally, she would often step in and ask, “Kristen, when was the last time you went for a run?” Of course, I hated it at the time and would storm off and put my running shoes on resentfully! But now I realize she was offering me the best natural medicine there was.

Exercise triggers the release of endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine—natural “feel-good” chemicals that boost happiness, reduce stress, and promote relaxation. Regular exercise also lowers cortisol, a stress hormone, which helps you feel calmer and more resilient. Research shows that people who exercise consistently experience a brighter mood, better focus, and stronger emotional health.

Beacon has long been the place I can show up to on my best days and have people to celebrate with me. As well as (and perhaps more importantly) on my worst days and know that I will be reminded that I am capable of hard things and have the support of an entire community to get through it.
