At Beacon Community Fitness, we believe in mastering the basics before pushing intensity. This philosophy is rooted in the concept of virtuosity—doing the common, uncommonly well. Whether you’re new to fitness or a seasoned athlete, embracing virtuosity can transform your workouts and build a strong foundation for long-term success. I was reminded recently that we sometimes chase being able to do something just for the sake of doing it. I have certainly done this have you? However if we slow down, and dial in the technique, build the strength and improve the virtuosity of movements then this will only benefit our ability to then do that something more efficiently and in a way that will support longevity in our health and fitness!

What Is Virtuosity?

Virtuosity means doing simple movements with exceptional skill. In fitness, this means focusing on perfecting technique rather than rushing through reps or adding weight before the technique is dialed in. It’s the difference between just getting the barbell overhead and doing a flawless, controlled press.

Why Does Virtuosity Matter?

When you take the time to master movement patterns, you’re setting yourself up for long-term progress. Not only does this reduce your risk of injury, but it also makes advanced movements easier when you’re ready to tackle them. Think of it as building a sturdy house—you need a solid foundation to support the structure.

Technique Before Intensity

Our coaches at Beacon emphasize technique before intensity for a reason. Pushing through workouts with poor form might feel like a win at the moment, but it often leads to setbacks. We would rather see athletes slow down, choose movements that support them in maintaining solid form, and practice movements with intention, and then add speed or weight as proficiency increases.

Real-World Example: The Air Squat

One movement that demonstrates virtuosity well is the air squat. It’s simple but crucial. A perfect air squat means maintaining balance, depth, and posture. If your knees are caving in or your back is rounding, adding a barbell will only amplify the problem. Start with bodyweight, master the position, and then progress to loaded squats.

Tips to Embrace Virtuosity in Your Training

  • Focus on Form First: Always prioritize quality over quantity. If you’re unsure, ask a coach to watch your technique.
  • Practice Movement Patterns: Dedicate time to drills that break down complex movements into smaller parts. Use the skill work sessions in our training sessions for this!
  • Seek Feedback: Don’t be afraid to ask questions or feedback from your coach. Learning is part of the process.
  • Be Patient: Progress takes time. Celebrate small improvements.
