What if it’s not “just getting older”?

I hear this more often than I’d like:

“I can’t squat like I used to.”
“My hips are always tight.”
“My back is just always sore.”
“I guess this is what getting older feels like.”

And while aging is real—and absolutely changes our bodies—there’s something important we often miss:

Not all stiffness, tightness, and discomfort is inevitable.

A lot of it is modifiable.

The problem with normalizing discomfort

One of the biggest shifts I see people make is quietly accepting limitations instead of actively working on them. Somewhere along the way, discomfort became “normal.”

We stop questioning it. We adjust our movement instead of addressing the root cause. We sit more. We move less. We compensate.

And over time, those small adaptations add up.

As a coach, I’m a huge believer in strength training, mobility work, and intentional movement. These are foundational tools for long-term health and function.

But they’re not always the full picture.

When self-work isn’t enough

Foam rolling, lacrosse balls, stretching, yoga, strength training—these are all valuable tools. I use them myself. I teach them. I recommend them constantly.

But I also know their limits.

There are areas of the body that are incredibly difficult to fully access on your own. There are layers of tension that don’t always respond to general mobility work. And there are movement restrictions that don’t change until someone with trained hands gets involved.

I was reminded of this recently in a very real way.

A personal experience with massage therapy

I had a session with our new massage therapist, Kate.

Like most people who train and move regularly, I had a theory about where my tightness was coming from.

My back.

That’s usually the suspect, right?

But Kate worked into my glutes in a way I honestly didn’t even realize I needed. Nothing about it felt obvious or expected in the moment—but that’s kind of the point.

When I stood up after the session, it felt like my entire back had opened up.

Not just looser.

Different.

My posture changed. My movement felt freer. And I had one of those moments where you realize:

“I was looking in the wrong place.”

The missing piece in recovery

That experience reinforced something I already knew but sometimes forget in practice:

We don’t always have full visibility into what’s driving our discomfort. And sometimes the missing piece isn’t more stretching, more strengthening, or more effort. Sometimes it’s skilled hands identifying and addressing things we can’t reach on our own.

Massage therapy isn’t a replacement for movement, strength training, or mobility work. It’s a complement to it.

Why we added massage therapy

This is exactly why we brought massage therapy into Yarmouth Community Fitness. We believe health isn’t just about what you do in the gym. It’s also about how you recover, how you restore, and how you take care of your body between sessions.

Our goal is simple:

Help people move better, feel better, and stay active for life.

Sometimes that means lifting weights. Sometimes that means improving mobility. And sometimes that means getting on the table with someone who can help your body let go of what you can’t quite fix on your own.

A question to leave you with

If you’ve been dealing with stiffness, tightness, or movement limitations, ask yourself this:

What if it’s not “just getting older”?

And what if there’s actually more you could do about it than you think?

You don’t have to accept feeling stiff, sore, or limited as your new normal. Whether it’s strength training, mobility work, massage therapy, or a combination of all three, the right approach can help you move and feel better.

If you’re not sure where to start, we’re here to help.

Schedule a free consultation with one of our coaches below. We’ll take the time to learn about your goals, discuss what you’re experiencing, and help you determine whether group fitness, personal training, health coaching, massage therapy or one of our other services is the best fit for you.

Your body is designed to move well and it’s never too late to start feeling better.
